Provenance: The Vose Galleries purchase it from M. Knoedler & Co., New York in 1916. It was sold in 1918 to Mrs. H. K. Wick of Youngstown, Ohio. It was later repurchased from Mrs. Wick by the Vose Galleries, and in May, 1927 sold to Mr. J. G. McMillan of Glencoe, Illinois for $8,250. Repurchased recently from MsMillian Estate by Vose Galleries.

Subject Description: Horizon at bottom third canvas. Ground flat from horizon to immediate foreground. Pool of water reflecting the sky, right center foreground. Four trees silhouetted against the sky, the one at left center rising to two thirds the height of the canvas. Sky brilliantly lighted right to left.
Condition: Center of sky very wrinkled. Considerable bitumen deterioration. Retouches evident in upper right corner of picture, in the center tree and scattered touches elsewhere.
Infra-red: Sharpens the details of composition, reveals signature.

Additional Examination Notes: A photograph of this painting taken with a raking light shows the extremely heavy texturing of the surface due to paint slippage and deterioration.
