Subject Description: The horizon is placed at the bottom quarter of the canvas. The foreground is very dark but a shallow ground plane is visible at the bottom edge of the picture rising slightly at the right and left corners. A single tall tree rises from the right foreground to a point above center. A smaller tree or group of trees is at the left. The middle distance seems to be a lake whose far shore is very dark and indistinct. A full moon placed in a horizontal drift of clouds is placed at top center.
Condition: Wide contraction crackle in landscape up to 2 mm in width. Paint has flowed into crackle which in turn has crackled again, probably due to second layer of paint. Scattered areas of re-paint.
Infra-red: nothing of significance
UltraViolet: reveals areas of retouching in the sky, and lower right and left.
Color:
X-ray: Thin irregular ground coat applied in a horizontal pattern.
